Trees that produce little waste, ideal for a terrace / swimming pool

Some trees simply give more flowering, fruit and leaf waste than other trees. In this blog we have listed a number of ‘maintenance-free’ trees for you that produce little to no waste. In particular, we also looked at trees with fruits that contain ingredients that stain your terrace tiles and affect wooden decking or even disrupt your swimming pool. In short, the trees mentioned in this blog are ideal for people who are looking for a suitable tree for a terrace, swimming pool or pond.

Evergreen trees = less waste

Trees that produce little waste quickly become the evergreen trees that do not lose their leaves. So think of evergreen, evergreen species such as the holm oak (recommended), holly (a bit old-fashioned) or laurel (can also be used on a trunk, the dark green Portuguese laurel is also suitable as a solitary small tree / shrub in addition to a hedge).

Slow-growing and compact, possibly multi-stemmed

Compact, slow-growing trees are generally more suitable for the patio or pool. The more compact, the less maintenance. But don’t just pick any compact tree. Read more tips and points for attention below. A multi-stem tree gives a playful, cozy effect, but they do take up a little more space. A standard tree is a good alternative if you have limited space in your garden or around your terrace.

Little waste around your terrace or near your swimming pool are the Osmanthus burkwoodii , evergreen mock holly with fragrant flowers. Maximum 2 – 2.50 meters high. Or take a look at a Dogwood Cornus, these compact ornamental shrubs/trees have beautiful flowers and beautiful autumn foliage. These do require a solitary spot and are a bit more hassle than evergreen species.

Trees that give a lot of ‘junk’ are these types:

Coniferous trees that drop needles such as Pines and for example Bald Cypress.
Poplars where branches break off quickly, even dangerous, often also fast-growing and therefore more maintenance.
Linden, birch and alder with their seeds/catkins/plugs they drop. These fruits often contain ingredients that irreparably affect your concrete or ceramic patio tiles. This also causes stains on wooden planks.
Head there with Mulberry trees

The normal Mulberry gives fruits that stain your garden furniture cushions or patio tiles. However, the Morus alba ‘Fruitless’ (White mulberry) is fruitless and will not stain your ornamental pavement or wooden decking. An ideal roof tree or solitary tree. So pay close attention to the specific species. The otherwise hardy Mulberry ‘Fruitless’ is therefore a good option, but it is deciduous in winter and fairly fast growing, so it does give leaf litter and pruning in the autumn.

espaliers

Would you like to place espaliers near your terrace or swimming pool? Then watch out for the well-known lime trees. Leilindes (ie lime trees) also have (acidic) ingredients in the fruits that can seriously stain your pavement or wooden decking. Slate trees suitable for your terrace, deck or swimming pool are the slate bog oak, slate holm oak and slate laurel. The espalier is also possible, but it is deciduous.

fruit trees

Our Fruit trees naturally give delicious edible or ornamental fruits (fruit trees with ornamental fruits already require a lot less maintenance). However, they are trees that are more suitable for a fruit fireplace or in your lawn, they give quite a lot of “waste”. Would you like to eat from your own garden? Then place smaller fruit shrubs near your swimming pool or terrace, such as the blueberry (make sure you have acidic soil!), the easy-growing red currant (delicious with yellow custard) or a raspberry bush (nowadays also available without thorns). In terms of edible ground covers, you can think of creeping thyme, mint (can proliferate), strawberry plants or other herb plants.

Tree grid

Preferably place solitary trees in a nice tree grid or tree ring made of Corten steel. This way the tree gets enough breath and water. When making espaliers, we recommend placing them in a wide border, not too close to your terrace. This also gives you sufficient space to apply good soil (other than the sand under your paving) and you have less chance of tree roots lifting your ornamental paving. Do you have a wet garden? In that case, it is better to build a wooden platform on picket posts in terms of terrace, here a huge amount of rainwater can be collected.

Swimming pool in the garden

In connection with salt or chlorinated water in a swimming pool, we recommend placing trees at some distance and planting them in such a way that no swimming pool water runs into the tree roots. Then place trees near your pool in a raised border or planter or ensure good drainage ‘the other way’.
